Illustration of the US physicist Hugh David Politzer (born 1949). Politzer obtained his doctorate in 1974 from Harvard University. In a paper published in 1973, he described a phenomenon in quantum physics called asymptotic freedom. This involves particles becoming more weakly bonded at closer distances and higher temperatures. It is a feature of a theory called quantum chromodynamics and applies to the nuclear interaction between particles called quarks and gluons. The phenomenon of asymptotic freedom was independently described by David Gross and Frank Wilczek in 1973. All three shared the 2004 Nobel Prize in Physics for their work.
