Prior to its organization, in 1742, the mem-bers worshiped with the Lutheran Congregation. On August 12, 1744, the elders of the Reformed Church calledRev. Jacob Lischy. Upon his retirement the thoughts of the con-gregation were finally directed to the Rev. Johann Conrad Wirtz,of Bern, Switzerland, who was then pastor in New Jersey. Thecongregation sent him a letter by the hands of Baltzer Spengler,desiring him to come to York, and preach a few sermons with theexpectation that he might become their clergyman.
