Betweenthe old country road and the water there were nohouses in 1800. Opposite Mr. Oershom Bulkley s thetide came up to the road-side. Where Adee Streetintersects Main Street there was a channel whichMoses Crookers sloop used to sail up. and the fieldsbeyond this were often overflowed at high-water. TheSaw Pit school-house stood on the west side of King. i;v k. 699 Street, about forty rods from the railroad. BetweenSeamans tavern and the western end of the villagethere were three or four small houses. On the trian-gular lot west of the school-house, and near theCatholic Church, stood a building known as theHaunted House. It was torn down some fifty yearsago. Here a certain Captain Flood, who is said tohave sailed the first market-sloop out of Saw-pit,lived at the time of the Revolution. John Floodthe boatman was one of the persons examined bythe Committee of Safety in 1770, in connection withthe trial of certain Tories concerned in the spikingof cannon at Kings Bridge. In this house, traditionstates, a daughter of Captain Flood was murdered,and the neighborhood was thought to be haunted byher ghost. Timid persons were long unwilling to passover the road approaching this house after dark ; andthere were stories afloat of strange flickering lightsthat had been seen moving over the meadows near byin the night.
