Ladies Day at the 2016 Aintree Grand National, Merseyside, UK. In previous years attendee’s outfits have got attention for all wrong reasons, officials at the Grand National urged this year's racegoers to 'smarten up' to make the event more aspirational.

Dawn Collinson said, "I realised at the weekend that I’ve been going to Aintree to cover fashion for the past 12 years, since the first Style Award was handed out. And for almost as many years, I’ve been writing post-Ladies Day about the appalling coverage it attracts in certain national media. True, in that time, the degree of vitriol has ebbed and flowed. Some reports were relatively kind, although even then the snobbish judgement was there if you read between the lines, others bordered on the barbaric in their savaging of the girls’ dress sense and this year, for me, hit a new low. Not only did we see the usual tired predictable paparazzi shots of girls toppling in their sky-high heels, having a drink and, well, just enjoying themselves far too much for decorum police’s liking, we had those gust of wind underwear-revealing photos too." They were the ones which nobody could have predicted when they left the house, and nobody would have agreed to if anyone had the courtesy to ask permission. Which, of course, they didn’t.
