His parents were bothearly residents of the State, hisfather being a pioneer of 1851 andhis mother a native of San Fran-cisco, where she was born in OToole receivedhis academic education at SantaClara College, where he took anactive part in student affairs andwas graduated in 1890 with the de-gree of Bachelor of Arts. He hadearly decided upon the legal profes-sion as a career, and on graduatingfrom college entered the office ofJ. H. Campbell, District Attorney of San Jose, where he obtaineda thorough rudimentary knowledge of the principles and practice ofthe law.
