Rocking Stone. 18th-century artwork of the delicately balanced structure known as the Rocking Stone, on Warley Moor, Halifax, West Yorkshire, UK. Visitors are shown at left, and a druid at upper right. Some rocking stones (also called logan stones) are man-made, while others are natural formations. They were thought to be the location of traditional ceremonies and judgement rituals by a number of peoples, including the druids. This artwork accompanied a description written by British clergyman and antiquarian John Watson (1725-1783). Published in Volume 2 (1773) of 'Archaeologia', the journal of the Society of Antiquaries of London.
