The Scandinavian authors pictured here are from left to right, top to bottom: Swedish scientist, philosopher, theologian Emmanuel Swedenborg (1688-1772) who wrote Heaven and Hell; Danish author and poet Hans Christian Andersen (1805-1875) who wrote Fairy Tales that included the Little Mermaid and The Emperor's New Clothes; Norwegian writer and 1903 recipient of Nobel Prize in Literature Bjornstjerne Bjornson (1832-1910) wrote, among other works, A Happy Boy and Magnhild; Norwegian playwright, theater director, and "father of realism" and one of founders of Modernism Henrik Ibsen (1828-1906) is best known for his play "The Wild Duck." Another play is "Hedda Gabler." The illustration dates to 1899.
