This custom prob-ably indicates the meaning of the name of thecapital, Antananarivo—viz., The Town of aThousand. The whole population of the island had for-merly been divided into numerous independenttribes, sometimes widely separated from one an-other by stretches of unappropriated country, buteach tribe subject to its own chief, and retainingin large measure its own customs.
