A hot water solar thermal system is seen in the Coney Island Train Yard Maintenance Facility in Brooklyn in New York
A solar thermal system is seen on the roof of a building in the massive 75 acre Coney Island Train Yard Maintenance Facility in Brooklyn in New York on Thursday, June 3, 2010. The 48 panels mounted on the roof capture and retain heat from the sun transferring it to water which is then used to clean and wash subway trains during their scheduled maintenance and for domestic staff uses such as showers. The system, which uses no chemicals, will save the NYCTA almost $460,000 a year and reduce greenhouse gas emission by more than 2600 tons a year. The yards are one of the largest transportation facilities in North America. (© Richard B. Levine)
