The road lay through steep andintricate lanes, of the most irregular con-struction in the world, but full of wildbeauty, and rife with the buds and thewreaths of the exuberant off to the right abruptly, instead ofpassing direct through Cuxham village, wecame all at once, after a quarter of an hoursride, upon a park mansion, clustered habita-tions, and a most interesting church in apicturesque situation, flanked by deep verdure, upon an emi-i nence skirting the downward road, along which we had beendirected to travel by the intelligent haymakers in a neigh-bouring meadow.
