In the Roman timestwo great roads led eastward from Ephesus; onethrough the passes of Tmolus to Sardis and Galatia,and the other round the extremity of Pactyas toMagnesia, and up the valley of the Meander toIconium, from whence the communication was directto Syrian Antioch and the Euphrates. Correspondingwith these roads, there appear to have been, on theE. side of Ephesus, Sardian and Magnesian were also coast roads leading northward toSmyrna, and southward to Miletus.
