Position of the 12th Corps and part of the 3rd Corps in Chancellorsville
Position of the 12th Corps and part of the 3rd Corps, covering the ground in front of Chancellorsville during May 2nd and 3rd Locations of the Army of the Potomac's XII Corps (under Slocum) and III Corps (under Sickles) during Hooker's campaign to circumvent Lee's defenses at Fredericksburg by circling to the west and attacking his flank. Splitting his army, Lee left half to face Union forces at Fredericksburg and moved half to confront Hooker at the Wilderness, an area of dense second-growth forest crisscrossed by small streams, or runs, near the junction of two main roads.
