Amateur astronomer observing eclipse. View of an amateur astronomer observing a partial solar eclipse by projecting it onto a screen through a telescope. With the telescope pointed at the Sun, and a metal shield (black, centre) in place, the image of the Sun can be seen clearly on the screen. The eclipsed area can be seen as a bite out of the solar disc at the screen's bottom corner. This is the safest method of viewing an eclipse. The Sun should never be viewed directly with any optical instrument as it may cause permanent damage to the eye, and even blindness. Solar eclipses occur when the Moon passes between Earth and the Sun, casting its shadow on Earth.
