Eastern flank of the Beta Regio, Venus, imaged by the Magellan radar mapping spacecraft in August 1990. The area covered by this image is 75km long and 20km wide. Beta Regio is a volcanic highland area in the northern hemisphere. In the centre of the frame is a radar-bright area of extensively cross- faulted terrain called a tessera. Near the top is a radar-dark smooth patch, probably a young lava flow. The tessera terrain is seen on Earth in regions of extensive subsurface magma movements, and is associated with volcanism.
