2nd Linotype Machine with Band, invented By Ottmar Mergenthaler; 3rd design he invented at Smithsonian, 1917. The linotype machine was the first device that could easily and quickly set complete lines of type for use in printing presses. Its invention revolutionized the art of printing; the first commercially used Linotype was installed in the printing office of the 'New York Tribune' newspaper in 1886.
