The African rhinoceroses conform with the Sumatran in this respect, though the groove is not so wide; so that this conformation of the squamosal may be said to characterize all the existing two-horned species« (Flower, 1876). Auch bei den ausgestorbenen Gruppen treten dieselben Unter- schiede auf und zwar so, daß größere Vollkommenheit des Meatus spurius und geringere Bedeckung des Mastoid ein Beweis größerer Spezialisierung sind. Als Merkmale des Vorläufers der Rhinocero- tidae nennt Osborn (189S); »the external auditory meatus [spurius] was widely open below; the post-tympanic portion of the squamosal had a short styliform process; between tbis dement and the ex- occipitals was probably a eonsiderable exposure of the mastoid portion of the periotic bone (present in Amyiiodon., wanting in Hy-
