There is no connec-tion from the crank pin; the crossheadattachment alone does the work. The absence of large or fiat wearingparts in a valve gear is appreciated bythose charged with the upkeep and inthis gear, as in several others, all wearis taken by pin connections which maybe case hardened and, when necessary, replaced at a minimum of absence of any great weight in themoving parts also tends to reduce theeffects of wear and at the same timethis feature adds to the ease withwhich the locomotive is controlledfrom the cab. In the case of a gear which neces-sitates the use of a link, errors due tolost motion are often uncorrected forlong periods owing to the difficulty ofmaking some of the adjustments, whilein the case of the gear without wearing. It follows thatwith the two extreme positions in har-mony the intermediate positions willshow corresponding harmonization. In BROTHERS \ALVE GEAR. parts, other than pins, a correction isso easily made by the adjustment oftapers, or by the insertion of new parts, that the general performance of theengine should be more or less distinctlybenefitted in the average.
