Capture of English tourists by Greek brigands, 12 April 1870, Lord and Lady Muncaster, captured at Oropos, near Marathon, Greece They were taken for ransom by chief Takos Arvanitakis, and the Muncasters released to negotiate the ransom. The other prisoners were killed whilst their captors were fighting the Greek army at Dilesi, triggering a crisis between Greece and Great Britain, who had advised the Greeks should pay the ransom and not engage the brigands.
