Sinking of Ss Athenia, September 1939 A young child wrapped in a blanket is assisted by a member of the Army Medical Corps onboard the Norwegian vessel KNUTE NELSON after its arrival in Galway harbour, Ireland. He had been rescued from the passenger liner SS ATHENIA which was torpedoed by U-30 on the evening of 3 September 1939 off the north west coast of Ireland and sank the following morning.
