Pentonville Prison (nicknamed The Ville) in 1842. The new 'model prison' was designed by Captain Joshua Jebb of the Royal Engineers, for convicts sentenced to imprisonment or awaiting transportation. Construction started on 10 April 1840. It was completed in had their own cells and were not allowed to speak to each other. When out on exercise would tramp in silence wearing brown cloth masks and were made to do menial work such as picking oakum (tarred rope), labouring work & weaving. Pentonville became the model for prisons throughout the British Empire.
