The Bee Bole at the Lost Gardens of Heligan, Pentewan, , Cornwall, England, UK

The Bee Bole dates from the 19th century and is a collection of vaulted cells into which straw baskets called skeps were placed. Bees inhabited the cells and produced honey and wax. During the summer months the boles were left open but as the weather became cooler the wooden doors could be closed to protect the insects.
