Mud Lake Bottom in Mexico City.

Location in Lake Texcoco where UNAM scientist Cinna Lomnitz has an array of seismometers in the mud of the former Lake Texcoco. The whole of Mexico City is built on this type of mud from a drained lake. Lomnitz has discovered that seismic waves are amplified by the mud and pass only the low .4 MHz frequency. It turns out that this low frequency is most damaging to tall buildings over 10 stories high. ( Peter Essick / Aurora Photos )
