The soldiers arrive at the inn in time todiscover the robbery, but Diavolo covers theretreat of his fellow-bandits by pretending tohave a rendezvous with some lady, arousirig thejealousy of both the Englishman and Lorenzo,the latter challenging him to a duel. The last act of the opera shows the forestwhere the duel is to take place. As Lorenzosadly watches the marriage procession of Zerlinaand the peasant Francisco approach, he recognizesin the crowd Giacomo and Beppo. Both arearrested by the young captain, who throughthem hopes to capture the chief, Fra two brigands are forced to betray Diavoloand lure him into a trap, where he is ensnaredand shot.
