Sandcrack is a vertical crack in the wall of the hoof, occurring, in the firstinstance, close to the coronet. CAUSES.—In the healthy foot, the fibres of the wall are firmlyheld together by adhesive material, which is secreted by the coronet,or, according to some authorities, by the sensitive laminae, whichcover the external surface of the pedal bone. If the secreting mem-brane be subjected to influences which will impair its healthy work-ing, the material secreted under such conditions will to a certainextent be deprived of its binding character, and the horn which it SANDCRACK. 175 supplies will consequently be wanting in strength. In some cases—generally those of hereditary predisposition—the horn is natu-rally so weak that it would appear liable to split on its beingsubjected to any violent strain. Thepernicious system of using seated shoes and of paring the frog, induces sandcrack by the unnatural mamier in which the entireweight of the animal is thrown on the crust of the foot, instead ofbeing distributed, as nature intended it to be, between the wall, the frog, the outer portion of the sole, and the bars; irritation 176 DISEASES OF THE FEET. being consequently set up in the secreting membrane from undueconcussion. A seated shoe is a shoe which affords pressure onlyto the wall of the hoof, and is made concave on its upper surface,so as to take all pressure off the sole. The effects of fast workon hard ground will aid in inducing the process of pervertedsecretion. If these influences be kept up for some time, that por-tion of the hoof, namely, the upper part, which has been secretedund
