Bear baiting. 19th-century artwork of spectators watching a chained bear being attacked by dogs. Known as bear baiting, this blood sport results in both dogs and bear being wounded and sometimes killed. It was popular in England for centuries, before being outlawed in 1835. This bear pit is at Charley's Theatre, Westminster, London. This artwork is one of a series by British artist Henry Thomas Alken (1785-1851), published in 1822 in the 2-volume work 'Real Life in London'. This fictional work told of the adventures in London of country squire Bob Tallyho and his cousin Tom Dashall (both spectating at centre).
