Papilla before the anus compressed and concealed. Pectoral equal in length to the space between the posterior nostril and the eye. Body much com- pressed, with a transverse diameter equal to one-fourth of its height. Head without markings, blackish above, smoky white laterally. Fins yellowish-brown, without bands. Four dark longi- tudinal strijws on the sides. The tail of the solitary Parisian speci- men is, as shown by Castelneau's figure 2, suddenly terminated, as if a rapacious fish had bitten off its Distance from point of the snout to the gill-opening . 2'25 in. >.
