After graduating from Princeton with the class of 1878, and from the Medical School of the University of Michiganin 1881, he took a post-graduate course at Bellevue Hospital in this city. Hewas for a year assistant in the office of Dr. Lewis A. Sayre. Entering thenavy as Assistant Surgeon in 1884, he was assigned to the Asiatic Squadron,with which he remained until 1896.
