From where Hewitt landed in his parachute to the crashed bomber was a little over amile. He started at dawn on Monday and it was not until the following Thursday night that he managed to reach the aircraft. During that time he suffered terribly from the thirst and cold, but despite his broken ankle he finally reached his goal and systematically destroyed all secret documents and equipment. He was spotted by an outpost of the Grenadier Guards, who brought him in totheir lines. After spending a few days in an advanced dressing station, he was flown back to his unit. When he arrived Hewitt found he had been given up for dead. Picture (issued 1st December 1943) shows - FLIGHT SERGEANT NEVILLE HEWITT of Theodore, Queensland, Australia.
