A manual of operative surgery . ehind thecarotid. The ligature isapplied to the arteryon the distal side ofthis branch. The recurrent laryn-geal nerve is in closerelation to the arteryat its termination, andis nearly parallel to itat its thoracic duct passesin front of the root ofthe left artery. The inferior thyroidmay arise direct fromthe subclavian, or haveorigin from the commoncarotid or vertebral. Itmay be double, or en-tirely absent. The size, course, andsituation of the vesselvary very greatly incases of bronchocele. Indications. — Thevessel is secured as a preliminary measure in removing the thyroidbody, and in cases of injury. It has been ligatured also, togetherwith the superior thyroid, for the purpose of arresting the growth,or of diminishing the size, of a bronchocele. The very free anasto-moses between the thyroid vessels, and the dangers of the pro-cedure, have rendered this measure very unsatisfactory. (See articleby Wolfler, Wien. med. Woch., 1886, and summary of thirty-onecases.). II b FIG. 326.—ANATOMY OF THE VERTEBRAL AND INFERIOR THYROID ARTERIES. {Modifiedfrom God/ees Atlas). The wound reachesto the clavicle. The sterno-mastoid is exposed and drawn outwards, the carotid artery and its vein are reached a
