Synaptic junctions. Coloured Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM) showing the junction sites, also known as synapses, between nerve fibres and a nerve cell grown in culture. Two nerve fibres coloured purple run diagonally. At top is the surface of a nerve cell (yellow) to which the nerve fibres have formed synapses. Impulses travel down these fibres into the nerve cell, typical of dendrites. The fibres branch before forming their junctions which appear as terminal swellings (top left). Across these swellings neuro-transmitter chemicals pass into the cell in response to nerve fibre impulses and in this way the cell is stimulated. Magnification: x10,000 at 6x6cm size.
