'The Empty Churchyard of What Was All Hallows Staining', c1935. The church of All Hallows Staining in the City of London collapsed in 1671, possibly due to weakening of the foundations caused by too many burials in the churchyard close to the church walls. The word 'Staining', which means stone, was to distinguish it from other City churches of All Hallows which were built of wood. The tower, built c1320, is all that remains of the building.
