Jamestown was founded on May 14, 1607, by a small group led by Captain Christopher Newport, who was hired by the London Virginia Company to transport colonists. It was to become the first permanent English settlement in America. Of 6,000 settlers sent to Jamestown between 1607 and 1625, 4,800 died. The colonists were poorly chosen, too many gentlemen, servants and specialized artisans and far too few farmers.
