It was built by Vefpafian, and wasefteemd the fineft temple of old Rome. Here were lodgd thefpoils that were brought from the temple of Jerufalem : andit abounded afterwards with an infinity of other riches. This temple, as we are told by Jofephus, who was in Romeat that time, was built immediately after the taking of Jeru-falem, when the Roman empire had put an end to all theirwars, and enjoyd peace on every fide. And according to him,the fpoils were firft brought to the Temple of Jupiter Feretrius, ?? ROME. TEMP. OF JUPITER STATOR. [fo called a ferendis Spolih] now Ara Cceli, and afterwards re-movd to the Temple of Peace,. then newly erected, and depo-sited there. The temple is faid to have been near 200 foot inbreadth and 300 in length, and lind throughout on the infidewith brafsrplates gilt. The vaults of it are hollowed in com-partiments, fomewhat after the manner of the Pantheon. Oneof its noble pillars now ftands before the church of S. MariaMaggiore, as is above-mentiond : I do not know of any otherof them that remains intire. There is a groupe of figures atthe Farnefe palace, which was cut out of the lower part of oneof and Sera- Further on, towards the amphitheatre, are remains of the5is- ancient temples of the Sun and Moon, [or Ifis and- Serapis] within the convent of S. Maria Nuova. There appears no-thing of them now, but a fort of tribune, or ftctions of cu-polas
