Liberation Operation Market Garden began with airborne landings in September 1944. The aim was to capture and hold a series of strategic bridges over rivers and canals. The advance of the ground troops to Eindhoven took place over a narrow front, a two-lane road that ran to the north. This made the 30th Army Corps extremely vulnerable to repeated and fierce German counter-attacks. The advance route was constantly under murderous fire. Many lost their lives. The British and Americans soon called the road 'Hell's Highway'. (Photo by Norbert Voskens / SOPA Images/Sipa USA/News Images)
