Image of "The Long House", 62 Strand Street, Sandwich, Kent.
Early C15 timber framed house, refronted in the C18 but preserving the overhang of the 1st floor. 2 storeys. 6 windows. Stuccoed front. Modillion cornice and parapet. Tiled roof. Glazing bars missing in windows. 2 doorways in moulded frames with rectangular fanlights and 6-panel fielded doors. It contains frescoes internally. This Grade II Listed house has a documented history dating back to 1253. Back in the Middle Ages Sandwich was a busy commercial shipping centre and this property, reputed to be the oldest inhabited house in Sandwich, backed onto the harbour. The cellar, still bears evidence of a now blocked off passage that would have lead to the quay. The original house is said to have been rebuilt in about 1570 in a style that reflected the Tudor period. Later remodelling of the front elevation in the 18th and 19th Century covered the older timber framed house. The rear elevation has an older appearance and fortunately much of the interior contains many fascinating period features including the famous Tudor wall murals and Italianate embossed plaster borders in two of the first floor rooms. The interior is an Aladdin’s cave of period treasures, the oldest being the 750 year old cellar. There is a wealth of oak wall panelling, exposed ceiling and wall timbers. 12 to 14 inch wide oak floorboards in one of the first floor rooms. A working Inglenook fireplace, further fireplaces in the dining room and some of the bedrooms. The dining room with painted Wainscot has a Gothic arch door and a similarly arched dresser adjacent to the fireplace. A mahogany staircase balustrade leads to the first floor and from there a staircase into the attic. The attic is a floor boarded area of 46’ x 16’ of usable space in which the ancient timbers of the roof construction are clearly visible. The Long House and Short House are actually two homes under one roof. The Short House, with it’s own independent entrance onto Strand Street, also enjoys a walled rear garden with a pond.
