Building 937 photograph Douglas World Cruises from air circumnavigation globe at Crissy Field, 25 September 1924, San Francisco

Two Douglas World Cruisers from the Round-the-World-Flight in front of the administration building at Crissy Field, 25 September 1924. In the early 1920s several nations attempted to circumnavigate the globe by air. On 6 April 1924 a team of US Army Air Service aviators, using four aircraft, took off from Seattle, Washington, and, returning to Seattle, 28 September 1924, were the first to circumnavigate the globe by air. The two aircraft, surviving the circumnavigation, landed at Crissy Field, pm, 25 September 1924. The Douglas World Cruisers, based around a modified DT-2 torpedo bomber built for the US Navy in 1921 and 1922, were powered by a reliable Liberty engine, had dual controls and were able to use wheels or pontoons as landing gear. The circumnavigation was well supported by ground crews around the globe. The photograph here is on a side wall of Building 937.
