Engraving of Titus Oates (1649 – 1705) in the pillory after being convicted of perjury. Oates fabricated the "Popish Plot", a supposed Catholic conspiracy to kill King Charles II. Judge Jeffries sentenced him to be pilloried in London and then stripped, tied to a cart, and whipped from Aldgate to Newgate, where he spent three years. From The Chronicles of Newgate, 1884.
