After his baptism he re-turned to Wales, where he was or-dained to the Priesthood and served inthe ministi-y. He also acted as secre-tary to Elder Wm. S. Phillips, who atthat time presided over the Welsh mis-sion. He occupied that position untilhe emigrated to Utah in 1855. Soon af-ter his arrival in Salt Lake City hebecame a member of the Nauvoo Le-gion cavalry, serving in two Indianwars and also the Morrisite war, hold-ing the rank of lieutenant. He was as-sistant government assessor and collec-tor of internal revenue under GeneralA. L. Chetlain, and held that positionfor several years. In March, 1870, he. filled the position of secretary to Cap-tain William H. Hooper, delegate toCongress, accompanying him to Wash-ington, D. C. In October, 1873, he wenton a mission to England, where he la-bored diligently in the ministry, partof the time as president of the Bir-mingham conference. He returned homein charge of a company of three hun-dred Saints and fourteen returningmisionaries, arriving in Salt Lake , 1875. For many years he filled theposition of clerk to the High Priestsquorum in Salt Lake City; was alsoWard clerk, secretary of the D. A. &M. Society, secretary of the DeseretTelegraph Company, auditor of theUtah Central railroad, president of theUtah Soap Factory, besides filling otherresponsible positions.
