He next commenced the study of law, butbefore completing his course he moved to NelsonCounty, Ky., to open a farm for his father and topurchase homes and locate lands for his brothers andsisters. Here he fell in the company of dissolutecompanions, and for several years led the life of aspendthrift. He was, however, elected to the Legis-lature of Kentucky as the Representative of Nelsoni!ounty before he was 2 i years of age, and was re-elected by an almost unanimous vote. -^>—5-. In 1798 he was licensed to practice law, and thefollowing year was admitted to the Courts of Tennes-see. About this time he left Nelson County forRussellville, in Logan County, broke away from hisdissolute companions, commenced a reformation anddevoted himself to severe and laborious study. Hethen began to rise rapidly in his profession, and soonbecame an eminent lawyer, and inside of four yearshe filled in succession the offices of Presiding Judgeof the General Court, Circuit Judge, fourth Judge ofthe Court of Appeals and Chief Justice of the State,—all before he was 32 years of age! In addition, in1S02, he received a commission as Major of a battal-ion of Kentucky militia, and in r8o4 was chosen aPresidential Elector, on the Jefferson and Clintonticket.
