Gilded statue of an angel on top of the Subé Fountain (1906) at Place Drouet-d'Erlon in Reims (Marne), France
Thanks to donations of 200,000 gold francs from Auguste Subé (September 12, 1807 in Reims- June 17, 1899 in Saint-Germain-en-Laye) and after a call for projects in 1903 which received 87 replies, the sculptors Paul Gasq, Paul Auban and Louis Baralis, the ornamentalist Joseph Wary and the architect André Najoux made it, surmounting it with a bronze statue of Fame and dedicating it to the four rivers that cross the Marne department. The first stone was laid on May 23, 1905, it was inaugurated on July 15, 1906. under the chairmanship of the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Senator Léon Bourgeois, in the presence of Mayor Adrien Pozzi. In 1942, the occupier removed the bronze statue. Its summit is surmounted by a gilded angel and on its pedestal are engraved the Suippe, the Marne, the Vesle and the Aisne which each flow from a conch, it is an allegory which never had water. It is surmounted by a large golden Victoire by Jean Barat installed in 1989 named La Gloire. La Suippe is spelled “Suippes” (old spelling). It was on the initiative of the Reims architect Bernard Fouqueray that the new statue was erected at the top of the Subé fountain, executed by the sculptor Jean Barat in 1989, inspired by a small bronze by Paul Gatz.
