The piston heads are of the solid typewith a tapered fit on the rod. They are designed to taketwo rings of js-in. square fibre packing, which are held inplace by a steel follower ring. by E. Haes, Stellite does not get harder as it gets hotter,but it gets tougher and holds the cutting edge longer. Cobaltis not affected by heat up to about 1,900 deg. F., andthe tungsten and chromium are not affected by any heat upto 2,600 or 2,800 deg. F. It is clear, therefore, that thecobalt becomes tougher up to the degree of softening,
