(, 95), was as-sistant in the office of the superintendent ofmotive power of the Calumet & Hecla Min-ing Co., Calumet, Mich., 1895-96; and laterwas draughtsman with the & HarveyMachine Co., Baltimore, with the W. Co., Hoboken, and with the Ameri-can Impulse Wheel Co., New York; andagain with the W. D. Forbes Co. as 1897 he passed a civil-service examina-tion for the position of junior engineer, in-spectors grade, in the War Department,receiving the appointment of inspector onriver and harbor work at Newport, but, beingat the time in the employ of the W.
