Coal dust explosion gallery. Researcher outside an explosion gallery in Buxton, Derbyshire, UK. Health and safety research in the UK started with investigations into safety in mines. After initial work in 1911, the Safety in Mines Research Board (SMRB) was founded in 1921 and laboratories established at Buxton (1927) and Sheffield (1928). The Safety in Mines Research Establishment (SMRE) was founded in 1947, one of the precursors to the Health and Safety Laboratory (HSL). Experiments at galleries such as these reproduced conditions inside mines, showing that coal dust was explosive under certain circumstances.
