Southern China. 17th-century map of the coastal regions of southern China, including the island of Hainan (lower centre) and Macau (upper right). Northern Vietnam is at far left. The Tropic of Cancer is across top. This map is from the atlas 'A description of the sea coasts [...] in the East Indies' (dating from around 1690), by London chart-maker William Hack (1655-1708). The map shows a scale (top left), soundings, sandbank locations (orange areas), and coastal details to aid navigation. It is thought to be based on Dutch sources. Some archaic or obsolete names recorded here are Tonquin, New Macau, Couchinchina and Quancy.
