The clamp cannot be used in a fewcases, and the cautery-clamp alone does not stop bleeding in everyinstance, so that these seem nearly balanced. The dragging in acase of short pedicle with the clamp is certainly an inconvenience ;if vomiting arise, this may become still greater, and the actionof the intestines may become seriously interfered with. After all,however, it does not appear that any objections have been adducedto either one of these three methods which are sufficiently weighty. Obst. Trans., vol. vii, p. 229. Before closing the wound it is necessary to examine the otherovary and to ascertain whether it be sound. If there be a cystictumor of the other ovary as large or larger than the fist, and ofsuch a character as to render it probable that it would, if left,grow and necessitate a further operation, it should be removed ;but it may be questioned whether it is advisable to meddle with itunder any other circumstances. The removal of the second ovarywould be effected in precisely the same manner as the first, butmore easily and expeditiously. The next step in the operation is the closure of the externalwound. But before finally doing so the operator must be surethat all hemorrhage from adhesions or elsewhere h
