Scaphites ammonite fossil. This is a fossil of the ammonite Scaphites nodosus, dating from the Cretaceous (145 to 65 million years ago). Ammonites, now extinct, were marine invertebrate molluscs with a spiral shell. Most were less than 20 centimetres across. This specimen retains much of its original shell giving it a pearly lustre. It was found in the Badlands of South Dakota, USA.
