Three essays : On picturesque beauty; On picturesque travel; and On sketching landscape : with a poem, on landscape paintingTo these are now added two essays, giving an account of the principles and mode in which the author executed his own drawings. . he matter himfelf; and then thefpirit of the impreffion may be ftill preferved^But moft commonly the retouching past is doneby fome bungler, into whofe hands the pJatehas fallen ; and then it is very bad. In a wornplate, at lead what you have is good: you havethe remains of fomething excellent; and if youare verfed in the works of the matter, your ima^gination may be agreeably exercifed in makingout what is loft. But when the plate has gonethrough the hands of a bungler, who has workedit over with his harfh fcratches, the idea o£the matter is loft; and you have nothing left, but ftrong, unmeaning lines on a faint ground;which is a moft difagreeable contraft. Such, prints, ( *75 ) prints, and many fuch there are, though offeredus under the name of Rembrandt, or Wa-terlo, are of little value. Thofe mafters would not have owned fuch works, Yet, as we are often obliged to take up with fuch im-preffions, as we can get; it is better to chufe afaint impreflion, than a retouched one. THE INDEX.
