Listeria bacterium. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of the flagellate bacterium, Listeria monocytogenes, the causative agent of the disease listeriosis. The flagellae (thread-like structure) are used for movement. Listeriosis is contracted through contaminated food. Pregnant women are especially vulnerable, as bacteria may cross the placenta to infect the baby, which has no immunity. A mother may only experience mild influenza-like symptoms yet may lose her baby. Other vulnerable people include the elderly and those taking drugs to suppress the immune system. Magnification: x23,500 when printed 10cm wide.
