Erich Maria Remarque, German author, late 1920s. Erich Maria Remarque (1898-1970) was the author of the anti-war novel All Quiet on the Western Front (1929), which describes the experiences of German soldiers in the First World War. He left Germany in 1931 and after the Nazis came to power his works were banned and burned.
