Hestudied law, was admitted to the bar, elected to the Legfis-lature, and made a judge of the Western Circuit. He fixedhis home in Greenville and never changed it. He wasplaced on the supreme bench as soon as the supreme courtwas established, and retained his place there until his death,except during the period in which he was a member ofCongress.
